Check this out. Jamie Oliver has brought has food revolution to Los Angeles.
He wants to bring this to other parts of the city.

I know the folks in Sunland/Tujunga aren't shy about making their voice heard.

I'm not affiliated with the show or anything (but do work up the street) but thought it might be a cool thing to get the producers to check out the kitchen's in our schools and perhaps get some healthy choices in there...

From http://www.change.org's website

Change.org recently brought you news that the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) refuses to participate with Jamie Oliver's television show, Food Revolution. The schools won't let Oliver film in their cafeterias, nor will they allow the sustainable chef to make some much-needed improvements to their lunchtime fare. If LAUSD gets its way, it looks like the revolution won't, in fact, be televised.

If you would like to see Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution allowed in LAUSD schools go to the below link and sign the petition:

Children also need to be educated about all the crap they eat when they are NOT at school, like burgers, pizza, soda and other junk food. Plus they need to know the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle. Too many kids these days are constantly stuck in front of their computers, playing Facebook, and piling on the pounds, leading to who knows what diseases in later life.

I agree. But with our rush-rush lifestyle and SO MANY fast food choices within walking distance of the school I think it is very difficult to do. My own child would not bring a sack lunch to school- would rather starve then do that. Never could figure out what that was about!

I have a few theories.

1. S/he doesn't want the other kids to think "Mommy" made their lunch.
2. S/he doesn't want the other kids to think s/he's too poor to buy lunch.
3. It's just not the thing to do.

I think it would be great to have Jamie here in S-T. I've followed his work for some time. It could bring some great community outreach to a very popular and timely subject.

LAUSD Food Services have been working with Jaime- they just weren't interested in being a part of a reality show full of what ever they make it out to be. You know how reality shows are--- far from reality... LOL
LAUSD's food services has been the forefront of healthy school food for decades.
BUT I do feel we should be shown on TV and let the positives come thru!

I'm ALL for this. My kids have pretty much disliked the cafateria food for a couple reasons. In their own words because it is "gooey" (as in the burritos...ugh..yuk) and "tastes like crap" (I know, bad Mom let's them say crap  ) . However, I have always been okay with packing their lunches every day because I feel in control over what they are eating and since we are healthy eaters overall, this is how we roll. Now that my older kid is in middle school though, I am confronted with new issues...like someone said above..the "uncoolness" of bringing lunch in a thermos. So now all she wants are finger foods, stuff she can eat while walking around. Um...ok? lol! Now I have a dilemma to solve and new menu to come up with. Bring it Jamie.

try a "wrap" instead of a sandwich (use a tortilla instead of bread), string cheese or laughing cow, frozen gogurts, granola bars.

Jaime's show is set to air April 12th. Let's see what he did considering he wasn't allowed in our cafes.
I know he did some samples outside of some schools and did some work at west adams high.

and we gave him the challenge to come up with menus that fit the disgustingly low budget of 77 cents per meal- AND HE DIDN'T FOLLOW THRU!

It was nice he tried. I could come up with a 77 cent menu. We used to eat on $40 a week for four of us so I know it can be done. I would guess the hard part would be working with the school district. I certainly gave up on them. I can't wait to see what he was able to do.

it's not the schools district that makes it hard really- it is the federal guidelines. They have thick books full of rules and if you violate them they take the money back.

I'm appalled to see how LAUSD has treated Jamie's efforts. What is it that they have to hide?

Why not, like he says, embrace 1-2 or 3 things? Where are our LAUSD Board members in this?

You can catch up on the episodes on http://abc.go.com/

I saw the footage from the LAUSD food processing facility that was supposed to put us at ease. I found that footage shocking on its own.

I might be in the minority here, but I'm actually on LAUSD side here. LAUSD may or may not be feeding healthy food, that's not what I'm referring to.

I'm referring to Jamie Oliver & Ryan Seacrests persistence to do this for ratings and have it aired on their show. I think LAUSD has been willing to work with Jamie Oliver as long as Ryan's Production company and their cameras stay out. LAUSD has said Oliver can come in but LAUSD will video, but Of course Oliver & Ryan want video rights, which makes me ask....Oliver & Ryan, do they really care about the kids or just ratings...Ryan is so Mr. Hollywood afterall.

Jamie could have worked behind the scenes with LAUSD privately to come up with a better menue if he was so concerned. I'm sorry, I'm just very skeptical, especially when it comes to show biz.

Anyway, it would still be nice to have him come to ST and tape a show, get the ST's name out there.
