Does anyone know about a Greyhound rescue? I would like to know if there is one in the area.

I see them all over the place. I know a lady from my school who has a connection. Are you thinking about adopting one?

They need room to run... My friend adopted a retired raceing Greyhound... When she got off the leash no way on earth you could catch her (the greyhound not my friend)... The point is they have to go for a run... But they're great dogs.

My friend has owned two rescued greyhounds and both died within two years from a type of bone cancer- or it was something similar. I am posting without doing any research about it.. but apparently its very common in greyhounds. Very heartbreaking for her. She loves the breed and their demeanor. Please do your research about illnesses to see if you can handle it if something like that should occur.

Thinking about it...I would like a companion for my Dachshund, maybe another Dachshund would be better if they need to run that much. Doxies are pretty much couch potato types. I've just always liked Greyhounds and I saw them at a Petsmart rescue one day a while ago and they seemed super-mellow.

Thanks for the info, I'm gonna think about it.

bmom,
I am a dachshund owner too. There are a few dachshund rescues here in So. CA. If you are interested let me know and I can either post here or PM you the contact info. Also, there is a doxie meetup group on yahoo I am a part of. We meet monthly at dog parks in the greater LA Area. Last Christmas we had a party with around 37 doxies in attendance. Most of the meetups are smaller though.

True about Greyhounds needing to run. Also they have the BEST sight of any dog so if they are off leash & they see something interesting a long ways off...they can be gone in a second.

My point is know your dog breed and make sure they get the kind of stimulation they were bred for. The dog will be happier and less neurotic.

Border Collies are extremely smart and need a lot of stimulation. They are natural herders and working dogs. AN unstimulated Border Collie can be really nuts!

Newfoundlands are water dogs with a thick waterproof undercoat and webbed feet. They might try to pull you out of your own pool even if you are NOT drowning!

Every breed has it strengths and weaknesses..just like people. When a person has a job or has a life that they love..they are happier.

The LA Doxie group can be found at

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/LADOXIES/

It is a very diverse group who in common share a love for their dachshunds. We meet at dog parks the 3rd Sunday of each month and occasionally have impromptu meet ups. One meetup is a hike, one a holiday party and at least one in the summer is at a dog beach.

One if the members, Joy Brun runs a rescue. Her website is:
http://www.doxykeeper.net/
She is in Lancaster but places dogs all over.

Dena Delgado heads a larger rescue, Southern Ca Dachshund Rescue:

http://www.delgadog.com/

She places many dogs and has several dogs being fostered in the valley. Her organization also hosts two really fun fundraisers each year: a Hallowiener Picnic and the Wild West Wiener Roundup.

Either one of these ladies can help match your family and current dog with another dog to adopt. There are fees for rescue dogs because these organizations spend a lot of money vetting these dogs and caring for them so they are healthy enough to go to new homes.

Best of luck and let us know what you end up doing.

Suzee
