Beautiful - thank you for sharing. My Mom loved hummingbirds, so now every time I see one I feel like it is her visiting me from beyond. :)

Ya...of course, but you can donate to the fireworks instead. Any amount will do.

I LOVE hummers, but BOY are they hard to snap a picture of! The ones round my place are usually too high up for me to get a real bead on 'em, though I did manage to get some shots of one of the wee fellas sitting on the power lines right above my head. Problem with that however is my bigdaddy 78-300mm zoom lens doesn't quite have enough reach to get a good photo when they're that high up especially when that crafty little bird's got the sun right behind him AND the fact that they're so dinky. Crows are hard enough....hummers? They're a challenge but as you can see from ThreeJunga's snap they're worth it cos they're soooooo cute!

Tips for catching Hummingbirds on camera.
1) Plant Bottle Brush tree right outside dining room window.
2) Wait for it to grow to eye level.
3) Gather additional patience. Yes the hummingbirds are right there in front of you...but just because they are at eye level does not slow their motions down in the least!

Fortunately, I was able to convince the Verdugos to stand still long enough to catch this image this morning. Good Morning, People of the Foothills. Have a great weekend!

Yeah, they do love them bottlebrushes, don't they? I was toying with the idea of hanging up one of those hummingbird feeders outside my big picture window which would 1, provide additional kitty tv for my indoor only feline five-pack and 2, give me the pleasure of observing these gorgeous little critters up-close (and maybe polish off a few good shots in the process)...anybody got a good recommendation for one?

ThreeJunga ~ beautiful pics!! olddave thanks for the awesome video!

I have had mega good luck with hummingbirds since moving here in 2001. They nest in our trees and I've had the privilege of getting pics of them in all stages, from nest building to egg laying to growing out of the darn nest and feeding at my feeder.
opalasattic, I have had only two feeders and I use only the water/sugar solution for food. One is the typical hanging feeder and and the other one was a suction cupped one on my large kitchen window. That was bird TV for my kitties as they could stand on the window sill and swat at them...... the birds weren't afraid of them after while and I really think they just teased the cats. LOL I stopped using the window one two years ago and those birds REMEMBER. They will hover at the window where it used to hang and then go to the feeder in the tree.
I have held hummers but I've never hand fed them.
A trick to get awesome pictures that I read on the net. A red shirt over your head and stand close to the feeder. It worked fine but I wasn't comfortable peeking out of a neckhole sooooooooooooooo I made a straw hat with silk sunflowers and RED silk Gerber Daisies glued all over it. (Minnie Pearl in SH lol) I put it on and stood on a stepstool about one foot from the feeder. Magical! They buzzed my head and went about their feeding at the feeder while I clicked away. My neighbors thought that I was nuts..... LOL I am..... get over it!
I'm in between moves and most all of my pictures are packed but here are a few that are floating around on-line.

My friend from the mountains, He always comes within 15 min. of our arrival, he will buzz the windows and door until I fill the feeder.

Gorgeous pics 8)!

I'd never seen hummingbirds till my first visit to LA in '05 and there they were flitting around the trees in one of the outside shopping malls we visited. My next visit to LA was in '06 and Elefino's mother was in hospital. We went to visit her one day - she was on the third floor - and I happened to look out of the window and there was a green hummingbird hovering right outside her window!
