Couldn't find anything on the news of why a helicopter was a constant north of me, then I logged on to FB and saw this post from the Fire Department:

*Fire* EB 210 Fwy x Tujunga Wash; MAP 503-B2; FS 98; Fire in confined space below freeway bridge; NFD; Ch:8,12,13 @ 5:33 AM -Brian Humphrey###

Will be interesting to see if this is "homeless camp" related.

It was on the news earlier that there was a grass fire near the EB Sunland Blvd. exit at the 210. At that time, it was a sig-a-lert on the freeway.

Fire Burns Debris Near Eastbound 210 Freeway

Jun 28, 2010 8:57 am US/Pacific

SUNLAND, Calif. (CBS) ― A debris fire burning Monday near the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway created a lot of smoke and spectator slowing, but no injuries were reported in connection with the blaze.

Motorists, who noticed the smoke emanating from underneath the eastbound lanes reported the fire at around 5:30 a.m., Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Authorities said 25 firefighters and other personnel were on scene, including members of the confined space rescue squad, Humphrey said.

The fire appeared to be burning debris and city fire officials were consulting with CalTrans to determine whether it was construction debris from road work, Humphrey said.

The Fire Trucks and Caltrans are still there at the scene.

CBS says it was a homeless encampment:

Jun 28, 2010 2:37 pm US/Pacific Crews Put Out Blaze Near Eastbound 210 FreewaySUNLAND, Calif. (CBS) ―

A homeless encampment caught fire Monday under the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway and burned for nearly four hours before being extinguished.

Motorists, who noticed smoke emanating from underneath the eastbound lanes, reported the fire at around 5:30 a.m., Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

"The fire underneath the bridge on the 210 freeway included mattresses and other personal belongings," Humphrey said, adding that there were no injuries.

Firefighters crawled under the bridge and eventually extinguished the flames, Humphrey said.

Caltrans engineers were on the scene to determine if the bridge suffered any structural damage, but it did not appear the structure was compromised, Humphrey said.

I am copying the above and sending an e-mail to CD2. And we all know that a homeless man is the #1 suspect in the Station Fire, don't we? I really do not know what it will take for them to take the problem of the homeless in our mountains and neighborhoods seriously enough to take care of the problem. Two precious fire fighters died in the Station Fire and destroyed our beloved Angeles National Forest and our lungs.
