Since when does a massive transportation and construction project become Art? Image Image
I mean, c'mon. . . its just a 340 ton hunk of granite hacked out of a Riverside quarry. Where's Michelangelo when we need him ?

It is a sort of happening. The kids at my daughter's school went out to visit the rock in transit. We could use another Bernini and a Robert Graham or two.

Leave it to people to have opinions on things they haven't spent any time researching. Seems like they never learn.

I also wanted to say about the cost for the project. It's all being funded by private donors to the museum and those who come to the museum to see it, so no taxpayer money at all. It's all from private donors.

Thanks admin for pointing out that this is being done with private donations, not tax money. One of the comments on the LA Times article notes the local jobs created by this effort, too. Lot's of positives with this project.

Seems to me this is just Bandito Park on a larger scale - might we see a smaller scale "Levitated Mass" there sometime?

One article says "all" funded by private donors and one article says "mostly" funded by private donors. Perhaps the next article will say partially funded by private donors. I still find it a ridiculous waste. Am I allowed an opinion here?

At least it wasn't wasted on rhino horn, or canned hunts or something totally destuctive. I still think it is inspiring and interesting, and will go to see it in place at the museum. No one said a thing about the cool Bernini!

Over the years I've realised that art is what someone influential CALLS art. If it's hyped up enough then it IS art - even if it's just a shapeless lump of rock.

We had an installation in one of our London galleries a couple of years ago which consisted of ordinary light bulbs turning on and off at random. Nothing else. Is that art? Not in my book it ain't :(.

Then there's this sort of thing. I'm not against abstract art per se, but I don't really like things that I feel I can do myself.

I suppose I could enter my bedroom as a work of art a la Tracey Emin. Mine's MORE untidy than hers any day!

It's still just a rock.

Even if it was private money, it is still too me, the stupidest waste of money to move a rock. A big White Rock.

Neither artiicle says it us being funded totally by private donations. One article says it was funded mostly by private donations, and the other says it is funded by private donations + museum admission fees. It's pretty straightforward?

$10 million, not a couple billion. We can at least be reasonable factual in our complaints, no?
