I have had bad heartburn for years. Not a day goes by that I don't have it. Everything gives me heartburn. At one time I was taking a pepcid ac about every 12 hours. I just discovered the miracle cure for heartburn! One teaspoon of plain yellow mustard! I just tried it and it really works! My heartburn went away instantly! I am in total disbelief. If you have chronic heartburn, give it a try. YAY! > :D

Apparently pickle juice works too, but I have not tried it.

Could be true! Mustard is best on a corn dog or Polish sandwich, though!

"The good news is that mustard is likely to work to reduce the burning pain associated with reflux. The bad news is that it is basically diluted vinegar and is likely to be less effective than taking a teaspoon of vinegar directly.

Fortunately, mustard does have one advantage: it tastes better and can be used in a variety of recipes. You could simply include mustard in your cooking or use it for a topping on sandwiches or other dishes."

When I had chronic heartburn, I read somewhere a cup of warm water in the morning and evening and would relieve it and it did.

I fail to understand how adding more dilute acid to your
stomach can help. When I get indigestion, and that is rare,
I just take some common baking soda (sodium bicarbonite)
and that is somewhat PH alkaline and neutralizes the acid.
I use baking soda for safely cleaning off the corrosive build-up
on a lead-acid battery, works great!

SO, what foods are great for (causing) indigestion so I can try the
mustard remedy? :?:

acidic foods, tomato sauce, citrus, high fat, fried, spicy, coffee and some tea, sugar, carbonated drinks. Pretty much everything for me. :P How do you take the baking soda? Mix with water? How much? (JUst don't mix it with vinegar! ) To me, heartburn and indigestion are two different things. I guess all heartburn is indigestion, but not all indigestion is heartburn. :P

P.S. It could be the turmeric or curcumin. Turmeric is a member of the ginger root family. Ginger has been used by the Chinese for many moons to aid digestion.

Well, those are a subset of my favorites nutrients you mentioned that I use every day (acidic foods, tomato sauce, citrus, high fat, fried, spicy, coffee and some tea, sugar, carbonated drinks) and they don't cause me a huge problem, EXCEPT IN EXCESS!! hahahhaha

The deal with baking soda is that IT IS A DRUG (not a deodorant) and it tells you
right on the package how much to take with a certain amount of H2O. And/or
consult with your physician or lawyer. The package I have says it treats " heartburn,
acid indigestion" and the best but not least "sour stomach."

THERE IS A HUGE WARING ON THE PACKAGE TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY DO NOT TAKE
IF OVER FULL FROM FOOD OR DRINK. And for this reason, I say better off to avoid the
drugs and go to D'Weiner Schnitzel and get a mustard dog. Not that far a drive. :P

We erupt volcanoes at school with baking soda and vinegar. I can imagine the troubles one would have if they mixed pickle juice with baking soda! Another cause, I discovered, is the huge portions of food we eat. Smaller portions recommended. DUH! Most of us over-do it with the portion size. Yes I am gulity, but I am going to work on that this summer.

Glad to hear your heartburn was eased by mustard. As to pickle juice, I have no idea where you heard that from, but I would suggest otherwise in my personal opinion. Most pickle juice contains acetic acid (vinegar) which is low in pH, meaning it is acidic. Someone suffering from heartburn would not want to digest vinegar as it would further irritate your esophagus. An esophagus that is sustaining chronic irritation from acid reflux is a major risk factor for esophageal cancer.

Commonly acid reflux is caused by a loose lower esophageal sphincter, also known as the cardiac sphincter. This sphincter is at the junction point between your stomach and esophagus, it is basically a muscle that voluntarily opens and closes to allow food bolus into your stomach. However, if that sphincter doesn't close tightly, acid will flow backwards and cause heartburn and irritation to your esophagus.

Some people have acid reflux because they produce too little HCL and so the vinegar helps. I've heard about apple cider vinegar, a couple teaspoons before meals.

I used to get it terribly and there was a time when it was unrelieved by anything and I had to do a few days of a clear liquid diet - apple juice, chicken broth, blah, blah, blah. That helped as did a prescription. I did not, however, want to remain on chemicals as my doctor suggested.

Apples help. Really. It takes a few minutes longer, but afterward there is relief. Also almonds, as someone mentioned, but they need to be raw. (and for safety sake, they should be organically raw so that they aren't irradiated raw). I also use raw milk. Helps.

Stress really aggravates it, so a stress reliever, or better yet, a stress avoider, helps long term.

Heartburn sucks!

The vinegar temporarily shuts down acid production as it tells your body that there is enough or excess acid present. Recently I heard about a magnet implant surgery that prevents heartburn, but I am wary about it. One lady had the surgery done 7 years ago without complications.

With all do respect to this person who wrote the info above, for anyone with heartburn, please talk to your doctor before you try apple cider vinegar. If you have chronic acid reflux then esophageal cancer is a very real concern, but all these folklores and home remedies that people write online are nothing more than just that. This vinegar thing has no substance. I'm assuming the person above Googled it, and found that false information about the counter balancing of the high alkaline pH.

In short, don't trust me or anyone else on here. Talk to your doctor if you have chronic acid reflux.

I have not and would not try the vinegar as it gives me heartburn just thinking about it. But I am telling you, the prepared yellow mustard works! It is a food rather than a drug. When I brought it up to my doc, she said take Zantac or whatever. That was not very helpful. I don't want to take that stuff for the rest of my life. It can't be good, long term. And it is expensive. Mustard is $2.00 a jar and it has some good natural ingredients.
