That is sad news. I wish him a miraculous turnaround. Think positive thoughts everyone, and send them>>>>> Elifino's way.

If I can do anything for either of you, please let me know. Even if you need a ride to a grocery store or just want to get out for dinner etc, let me know. I am hoping for a speedy recovery for Elefino.

Get well soon Elefino - I enjoy your posts. At least he is in a quality hospital with top notch caregivers and state of the art facilities.

Thanks folks. It's made me cry to read your replies and to know that you're all such nice people. It really helps and I'm sure Elefino would appreciate it too. I'm going with his sister to see him this afternoon and I'll tell him everyone's rooting for him.

Thanks. That means a lot to me. You don't know how much.

I'm very "cheap to keep". I don't need to do things that cost money. I'm a keen photographer and I would be quite happy to go for drives and walks in the mountains or wherever and take photographs of the scenery and wildflowers - especially the Lancaster County poppy reserve.

I'd also like to go downtown and photograph the buildings there, but the usual touristy things don't really appeal to me. Too expensive and full of other tourists!

what might be fun for you, sunflowers, is to take the subway downtown and walk around to see the buildings. maybe we can do that one day this week. i'm here for you too-for this week at least.

i'm also wishing elifino a complete and speedy recovery.

When I get some money I'll do that.

Thanks. I'll pass on everyone's good wishes to him. I hope he'll be a bit more alert today. He was pretty out of it yesterday.

Latest update: Joel's better and worse than was first thought. Better because he hasn't got kidney problems or congestive heart failure - which is a huge relief - but worse because they're worried about blood clots breaking off and travelling around his body and causing thrombosis so they have him on blood thinners and also an intensive course of antibiotics to try to combat the infection in his heart valve. The doc went on about Systolic and Diastolic infection and one is apparently worse than the other, but neither of us was really sure which he has.

He also still can't breathe on his own so he's on pressurised oxygen to keep his airways open. They came round while we were there and changed his mouth/nose mask for a diver-type mask which is more comfortable for him because the other one was giving him red marks around his nose.

He's going to be in ICU for at least another week and then they'll have to move him to a convalescent unit because he's on MediCal, which doesn't cover home treatment and he's not eligible for MedicAid till he's 65 next year.

Looks like a very long haul :(.

I just can't say enough how sorry I am to hear about Elefino's illness. These infections are scary, to say the least. I had a friend who developed sepsis after the flu turned into pneumonia. Touch and go for a few weeks and then a couple months of rehab, but he's up and about and relatively healthy. I pray it's the same for Elefino.

Never having met him, I have smiled many times reading his posts and I hope to be reading more of his posts in the future.

Many healing thoughts!,

Deborah

Joel's sister Jeannie went to visit him in the hospital today and she sent me this email:

Hi Caroline,
Here's what I heard today when I talked to one of the doctors. Joel is VERY sick, however, the infection in his blood has cleared up, but is still there in his heart valve. His team of doctors would like to replace the valve as soon as possible to prevent pieces of infectious growth breaking off and causing other problems like paralysis, strokes or eyesight problems. I agree with them. The team is looking for a surgeon to do it. He looked much better today and is trying to eat again. I appreciate all the concern. Thanks to everyone who is concerned about his progress!!!!
Jeannie
