Last night around 9:45pm I was settled in bed. All of a sudden the pipes in my house were gurgling and banging. Then I hear an explosion in the hall bathroom. My son comes running in my bedroom and said the toilet just exploded. I'm like-"what?" I run in there and it reeks of sewer and all the toilet bowl water was on the floor. The toilet didn't break but the force of the "explosion" opened the lid. By now I'm ticked off and wondering-WT*? We looked out the window and see that about 4 houses up Graystone is a large dark blue LACity sewer pump truck. One household of neighbors is outside as I join them. As the truck pulls away, we flag them down. The city worker tried to explain to me how they just did work on the line and what happened in my house happens sometimes and they're sorry. I asked what do I do with the BIG mess and he said to just clean it up. So we did. Took awhile as we had to shop vac it up and then bleach everything. Turns out that only "clean" toilet bowl water spilled out but at first I thought the sewage was in there. That's how bad it smelled. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Good grief-it was way past my bedtime when we got done cleaning. Never experienced anything like this!! Never did find out from my neighbors if their toilet blew. They were out there because of the noisy truck.

Yikes! they were over at Wescott/Wentworth earlier last night when i came home and i was wondering what they were doing. Could it be sewer gas coming back in through the pipes? that's so scary.

Ask your neighbors tomorrow. Now I am curious to see if they take (DWP) accountability. How dare they say, "Clean it up." :x I would definitely put in a complaint!

Ewwwwwww! I would DEFINITELY complain to DWP - AND put in a claim for compensation for the time and expense involved in cleaning it all up!

Let us know what happens.

I just said to Tony yesterday that it smells bad at the sinks, like there is a smell coming up from the drains.

That sounds miserable - I've cleaned up sewage messes before and know how bad it can stink.

But it makes me glad to be on septic.
