Just went to the Sunland Hardware, noticed it was closed (never on Sunday!) and it had a "True Value" Hardware sign there. Are we actually getting lucky in Sunland for a change? Would LOVE to have a decent hardware store here..Just wonderin'/hoping..... :D :D

Yes. It's been a True Value Hardware store for years. However, I have not found any "true Values" there. I go to Merrithew's Hardware store on Commerce, it is also a True Value Hardware. These Mom and Pop type hardware stores are still here because Home Depot, well, had issues. I am a local contractor and if I need lumber, piping, electrical, there is Do-It Center, OSH, and of course Home Depot ten minutes away in Sylmar.

I hate going to the home depot, over off the 210. The Lowes next to Costco is so much nicer.

I remember that store always being closed on Sundays. I thought it was crazy to be closed on the day you could get the most business.

I've been going to Merithews (True Value) on Commerce for most of my stuff. I've found they have just about everything Osh or Doit has, but you just have to ask where to find it. Assuming you're not shy about talking to the guys there, you can get in and out of Merithews in about half the time it takes to go to Osh and wander the aisles until you find what you need.

Merithews has pretty old stock, which is actually good. I found parts for my home electrical that none of the big guys carry anymore. Stuff like discontinued circuit breakers, old dremel bits, etc.

I also compared prices at Merithews to H-D and Lowes: Merithews does mark up a bit more than the big boxes, but I've found it to be less than 10%. For small bits & pieces, the time saved going local is worth the money for me.

Years ago my son was looking for white gas. None of the bigger stores carried it, but Merrithews did. Where else can you call up and say "my son is going to be running in to buy white gas, can you hold it for him?". Try that at a big name store!
