The struggling Verdugo Hills Golf Course is getting a facelift and new management, giving new hope to residents who want to save the 60-acre site from residential development.

On Monday, course owners Snowball West Investors replaced the former manager and four other staffers. Plans are in the works to improve the grounds, add beer and wine at the restaurant, lower greens fees and lure tournaments to the 18-hole course.

Golf anyone! Guess I will have to get my clubs out of the garage and actually use them. Oh...I guess I better learn how to use them.

Glad to hear this. Great news!

Tournaments? What kind of tournaments? I thought it was what is called a "Pitch and Putt".. The first few times I went there in the mid 1960s, the longest hole was 115 yards and the shortest 60 yards. I played with a single 9 iron and putter I rented at the desk. I think I could have dispensed with the putter.

Elefino, the VHGC has had a lot of tournament play over the years. Unfortunately the uncertainty of the last few years has reduced the number of tournaments. I'm glad Snowball West Investments wants to encourage folks and tournaments. That's a great move and John Mascarenas was a good choice for new manager.

Speaking of 3-par courses....check out an article that ran last week on WSJ.com.

'Why We Need More Par-Three Courses' :D

I'm in the same boat as you, Hummingbird...I don't know how to golf! I sure do enjoy the VHGC though, especially having lunch there! Yeah, 'Tee's on the Green' !

I hope my reply didn't sound like I was "dissing" VHGC. I wasn't, I just didn't know and have never heard of any Par 3 tournaments.
VHGC was a fun place for non-jock teenagers like my friends and I. :D

Nah, I didn't take it that way at all, Elefino. One of the things I've enjoyed during the last few years is hearing about why people like the golf course, why they feel an attachment. On Save the VHGC Facebook page I learned about ice blocking on the course, something I wasn't familiar with! One of the good things about life, we keep can keep learning stuff all the time.
