One of my kids went to a gifted/high achievement elementary in Arleta and never had that experience either. and this same kid has had a great experience at VHHS Magnet, and my other two kids had no problem at VHHS regular.

I am really sorry you are having these troubles. I know it must be very frustrating.

What school are you talking about Party of 5? My kids went to a gifted/high ability magnet elementary school and Pacoima TFA magnet (2 were in the gifted classes and one was regular) and I never saw or heard of anything like that from my kids! The 2 worked hard. And in High School- Cleveland Humanities Magnet and Granada Hills Charter they were treated well but much was expected of them.
The only kid I had who was treated badly at all was Verdugo Hills High School. That is horrible if this behavior of which you speak is widespread.

Mount Gleason.
It is pretty obvious MG needed to up up the scores etc., to not be threatened with Charter and so we were lured as hoping beyond hope parents that our little neighborhood middle school would present itself a nice education experience for the whole family.
It is a parents worse nighmare. A bait and switch scheme involving children !
Bait the parents with a "gifted magnet" then switch to underperforming EVERYTHING by presenting "b" team teachers.
Core Curricul teachers who do not assign ANY work of ANY kind outside of class. Core-TextBooks barely used .
Students do NOT read ANYTHING within the subject matter in History or English except for class notes dictated by the teacher and those are sparse if any.
They watch ALOT of movies .
They treat these kids like they are unteachable.
They roust/harass the kids within their classes at any moment during the day to "inspect" their clothing for dress code violations that are NOT written down anywhere . ie: crew next shirts cannot be more than 3 inches below the neckline. huh ? since when ? NEVER. The teachers are bullys.

Perhaps it is a cinderella story. The step children that pay the bills, so to speak , are treated like trash.

I can't believe that all the gifted/magnet parents aren't able to get something resolved with this. What does the Magnet Coordinator have to say about the curriculum? My memory of Gifted magnet is a student must be GATE recognized and tested into the program.

why aren't all these parents banding together and talking to the school? I know I would if it were my experience. DEMAND a meeting with ALL the magnet parents

That tactic is like trying to catch the wind.

The only sure fire way to hold instructors accountable for curriculum and behavior during the school day is ... cameras in the classroom.
And , turning the values of the USA on its ear and actually en masse valuing their children and education beyond the current trend in using children and their education as temporary campaign strategies.

sigh.

I like that phrase "like trying to catch the wind"

So, you did try to get the other parents to meet with the school personnel and that didn't work or the other parents weren't interested?

Every time I hear a horror story from Mt Gleason I shudder and then remember how GRATEFUL I am that my kids did not experience that treatment in middle school.

Ed rep has been fighting this battle for years. Joining her is probably the best strategy. I have been to the board meetings and Sacramento and the people in charge are beginning to take notice.

So we have to keep the pressure on until they teach the teachers that the students are sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, etc. In other words, valuable people.

If you can go to Sacramento you should. The experience is great and the knowledge obtained of the education system in priceless.

Every time we have raised an issue it has been dealt with . Temporarily. Then it is BS as usual. It is the teachers that can't learn.
If we were ignored then we'd try to raise an army. Since all matters have been acknowledged by the admin. they are admitting a change is needed.

Thing is, parents are not paid daily to monitor the daily progress of the behavior of the teachers toward students or of the manner with which curricul is being presented.
So eventually , we go back to our real jobs, then the poor conditions re present themselves.
There is never a time when consistency prevails.
Because the leadership understands this we are actually outnumbered .
And they have our children.

What are we all gonna do, leave ? Go where ? Where are the chairs to seat the children ?
Private ? LOL And know that your few dollars are still paying people who shouldn't be teaching adolescents ? arg !

One true story here, one teacher actually used sick time to go down to her UNION to complain that a parent was harassing her . The coordinator actually had the nerve to ask the parent to stop contacting the teacher. huh ? So, the union now controls the actions of parents ??
I read the alleged " harassing emails ".. LOL !!! This parent just would'nt swallow the cut and paste rhetoric non answer from the teacher to excuse her from due dillegence to the students. The parent simply kept repeating the question.
And again, the family prevailed but this year two families have left the Magnet with this same teachers name resounding as a prime reason. But the stories were far worse.
When you have a child who begs their parent not to contact the school because of an issue even the child knows is not right, you have got BIG BIG problems.

Wow, this is the most profound statement . yikes.
So we have to keep the pressure on until they teach the teachers that the students are sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, etc. In other words, valuable people.

How do you teach an ADULT how to treat others with dignity and respect ?
How do you teach an ADULT to use strategy other than bullying when working with persons weaker then they ?

Other than the Prison System anger management classes and re-habilitation workshops to prepare inmates to re enter society ... I don't know , do you ?

LAUSD employs too many people who should NOT be in front of adolescents or children of any age.

btw, I have heard a fair share of horror stories from other LAUSD campuses. Again, t is systemic.
